A new invigoration takes over as the winter snow thaws away, and the sun begins to shine. The days grow from short and dark too long and bright and we begin to feel motivated, empowered and overall happier. This Spring, why not take advantage of the good vibes and begin to blossom into your healthiest self with these tips:

  1. Identify the why

Why do you want to get healthy? Sit down with a pen and paper and identify the reasons why you want to embark on this journey. It doesn’t have to be “to lose weight.” Maybe you want to feel healthier, or have more energy. Once you’ve identified the reason, it will become easier to stay true to your intentions and say no to that sweet treat your co-worker brought in.

Find a group that shares your health values

Group exercise has a number of awesome benefits, especially after a long winter of semi-isolation or ‘winter hermiting’. Not only do you get a social, fun environment that is missed when working out alone, but you receive structure and guidance with a proper instructor. According to this Globe and Mail article, exercising in a group “ unleashes a flood of chemicals in the brain, triggering the same responses that have made collective activities from dancing and laughter to religion itself such enduring aspects of human culture.” Overall exercising in a group will help turn exercise from a chore to a healthy addiction.

The 80/20 Rule

You may have heard of this rule before. In the context of getting fit, you follow your health goals 80 per cent of the time, and leave 20 per cent wiggle room for missing a workout or indulging. This is to avoid the guilt that we can pile on top of ourselves when trying to get our health on track. Instead of beating yourself up, allow yourself that 20 per cent, creating a positive relationship with food and exercise.

Being Fit Everywhere

Sometimes getting fit takes evaluating the 360 degree picture of your life. Are you eating right? How about your sleep? Are you exercising habitually? This can even be the simple decision to take the stairs instead of the escalator or riding your bike to work a couple times a week. There are things that you can do throughout your day to aid in your health journey, find what they are and actively chose to be fit everywhere.
Spring is a great time to focus on your health and blossom into the best form of you. Use the momentum to begin your health transformation!
