Working it out: Food is fuel

I love food, don’t get me wrong, but I always eat too much of one thing, and not enough of another.

When I would search online, read books or talk to people, nutrition felt increasingly overwhelming. I would hear things like eat protein, but not too much, drink lots of fluids, but nothing with extra sugar, and don't forget carbs, but not too many. I never knew what to eat, and what not to eat. I was so overwhelmed.

I’m a lover of snacks. I’m studying? I need a snack. I’m watching TV? I need a snack. Snacks aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Just have to find healthy snacks that won't leave me even more hungry than I was when I started snacking. According to research, snacking is more common when the brain is distracted, such as studying or watching TV.

One thing I had to learn the hard way, is that there is nothing wrong with leftovers. You know when you overestimate and make pasta for 5 people instead of 1? Well, I hated that, because I hated leftovers. I ended up eating all of the pasta I made, even if it was too much. This was one of my downfalls.

I would eat until I was so full I could barely move. All these bad food habits led up to a realization. My body knows what's best for me.

All I need to do is to listen to my body. Does my body say I’m full? I need to stop eating. My body says it's hungry. I need to eat. Listening to your body can be your superpower for eating right. Dr.Tchiki Davis, graduate of Berkley Univeristy, says that when you listen to your body “eating healthy can become both easier and more enjoyable because you are finally in sync with your body.”

Sometimes finding the right healthy recipes can be a good first step. I have a sweet tooth, so I personally love snacks with peanut butter. Like this no-bake granola bar recipe.

Eating and nutrition are all about balance, it's okay to have sweets and treats, but balance is the key. I’m still not great at balancing my nutrition, but it's a work in progress.
